MaryRita Sarkissian is a Southern California native and graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara – holding a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and minor in Education. Her love for teaching and working with kids began at the age of seventeen, pursuing her career as a Performer, Choreographer, Yoga Instructor, and Aerial Yoga Instructor. Growing up, she joined a competitive dance company known as Julie Kay’s Dance Company, and moved to New York City in 2011, granted a full scholarship to train with the Joffrey Ballet School Jazz and Contemporary Program.
During a difficult time in her life, she began to draw attention to her breath, health, alignment, and movement - that was when Yoga found her. Her teaching style is dedicated to empowering students through movement and yoga principles to find mental and physical stability. She began training at Better Days Yoga in Santa Barbara, where she practiced styles on the mat, and in the hammock. Mary is a Certified Aerial Yoga Instructor, completing her Aerial Teacher Training in September 2014. As she diligently studied the practice on a deeper level, she completed her 200Hour Yoga Teacher Training with YogaWorks. She instructs yoga to both children and adults, and also shares the art of movement to those with special needs.
After finding a practice that fires her soul, she shows her students the beneficial aspect of Yoga in every classroom she teaches. Her purpose is to allow students to overcome fear, to understand the difference between pain and discomfort, and to overcome any obstacles – on and off the mat. There is no other way for Mary to create and awaken both fire and light from within without bodily movement; therefore her principle in life is: “Movement is medicine.”
